Spices, Temples & Tea Gardens : A Journey to South India

15 Days / 14 Nights

Day 1 – Chennai – Arrival

Morning: Arrival at Chennai International Airport. Meet and greet by our local representative at the airport, followed by transfer to the hotel. 

Evening: Departure to visit Marina Beach, one of the longest urban beaches in the world, lively from early morning with fishermen and walkers. Stroll along the shore to experience the local atmosphere, street vendors, and views over the Bay of Bengal.

Return to the hotel.

Day 2 – Mahabalipuram / Kanchipuram / Mahabalipuram

Morning: After breakfast, depart for Mahabalipuram, an ancient port city known for its UNESCO-listed monuments. On the way, visit the temples of Kanchipuram, a city that was once the capital of one of India’s oldest dynasties, the Pallavas. Visit the Ekambareswara Temple, famous for its gigantic Shiva lingam. Then continue to the Kailasanathar Temple, one of the oldest temples in the city, dating back to the 7th century.

Afternoon: Arrival in Mahabalipuram in the early afternoon and check-in at the hotel. After some rest, visit Arjuna’s Penance, a 7th-century bas-relief depicting the penance of Arjuna, the hero of the Mahabharata epic. Then see Krishna’s Butter Ball, an enormous balancing rock that has fascinated visitors for centuries.

Continue with a visit to the Shore Temple at sunset, dating back to the 7th century and one of the earliest stone temples carved from a single block. Discover also the Five Rathas of the Pandavas, rock-cut monolithic structures representing the chariots of the heroes from the Mahabharata.

Evening: Free time to walk along the seaside and enjoy the local atmosphere of this historic port, once a departure point for many merchant ships sailing to Southeast Asia.

Day 3 – Mahabalipuram / Pondicherry

Morning: After breakfast, depart for Pondicherry, the former French trading post in India.

Afternoon: Upon arrival in Pondicherry, check in at the hotel. The city remained a French colony until 1954, and its French influence is still visible today. In the afternoon, visit the Vinayaga Temple dedicated to Lord Ganesha. Continue with visits to the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church and Our Lady of Angels Church. The first is known for its colorful stained-glass windows, while the second reflects an interesting blend of French and Tamil architecture.

Evening: Explore the French Quarter of Pondicherry. Here you will find streets lined with houses featuring colorful shutters and French street names. Then enjoy a walk along the seafront to feel the ocean breeze from the Bay of Bengal.

Day 4 – Pondicherry

Morning: After breakfast at the hotel, depart for a bicycle rickshaw ride through different facets of Pondicherry. The first stop is the Muslim quarter, vibrant with energy and sounds. Then head to Goubert Market, a colorful explosion of aromas and activity where everything is sold, from fresh fruits to handcrafted jewelry. The ride ends in the historic part of the city, where colonial heritage meets modern life.

Afternoon: In the afternoon, depart for Auroville. This international community, dedicated to universal peace and harmony, is a fascinating place. The Matrimandir, with its golden dome, stands as a symbol of spirituality. The Sri Aurobindo Ashram offers an opportunity to immerse yourself in a peaceful environment ideal for reflection on the teachings of the sage.

Late afternoon: Free time to explore the markets along MG Road, the perfect place to shop for souvenirs or simply soak in the local atmosphere.

Day 5 – Pondicherry / Chidambaram / Gangaikondacholapuram / Darasuram / Tanjore

Morning: Departure for Tanjore, a city rich in history and culture. On the way, first stop at Chidambaram to visit the famous Nataraja Temple, dedicated to Shiva as the Cosmic Dancer. This temple is a masterpiece of Dravidian architecture and a major center of Hindu spirituality.

Afternoon: Continue the journey with a stop at the temple of Gangaikondacholapuram, dedicated to Shiva as the “Lord of Victory over the Three Worlds.” Admire its intricate sculptures and refined architectural details. Then head to Darasuram to visit the Airavatesvara Temple, another magnificent example of Dravidian architecture, known for its remarkable miniature carvings. Upon arrival in Tanjore, check in at the hotel.

Evening: Enjoy a walk through the markets of Tanjore to experience the local atmosphere, whether strolling through lively streets or relaxing in a local café.

Day 6 – Tanjore / Chettinad

Morning: After breakfast, visit the Brihadeshwara Temple, an outstanding example of Chola-era art and architecture. This 11th-century UNESCO World Heritage temple is famous for its imposing vimana (sanctuary tower) and detailed sculptures. It is a must-see to understand the depth of spirituality and artistic mastery in South India.

Then depart for the Chettinad region, homeland of the Chettiar community, wealthy merchants who traded between India and Southeast Asia.

Late afternoon: Upon arrival, check in at a former Chettiar mansion. Then visit traditional Chettinad houses, architectural gems reflecting the prosperity and refinement of the Chettiar community. Each house is a unique representation of local art and architecture.

Evening: Free evening at the hotel for relaxation or personal activities.

Day 7 – Chettinad / Madurai

Morning: After breakfast, depart for Madurai, often considered the cultural heart and soul of Tamil Nadu. Upon arrival, check in at the hotel and freshen up before the afternoon visits.

Afternoon: Visit the Tirumalai Nayak Palace, a 17th-century architectural masterpiece. Admire its massive columns, delicate frescoes, and majestic hall. Once a royal residence, the palace offers fascinating insight into the grandeur of Madurai’s past.

Return to the hotel for some rest or continue exploring the markets surrounding the temple.

 

Evening: Free evening at the hotel.

Day 8 – Madurai – Cultural Capital of Tamil Nadu

Early morning: Visit the Madurai flower market, where intense fragrances and vibrant colors create an authentic glimpse of local life. Enjoy a cup of chai (spiced milk tea) or taste idlis, a popular South Indian breakfast made from fermented rice batter.

Late morning: Visit the famous Meenakshi Temple, one of the largest and most impressive temples in India. Dedicated to Goddess Meenakshi and her consort Shiva, this temple is a masterpiece of Dravidian architecture. Discover its towering gopurams covered with thousands of colorful sculptures, vast courtyards, and richly decorated halls, including the famous Hall of a Thousand Pillars.

Afternoon: Explore the bustling markets surrounding the temple. 

Late afternoon: Return to the temple to witness the evening ceremony of the divine union, when the idol of Shiva is carried in procession to the chamber of Goddess Meenakshi, symbolizing their reunion for the night. Sacred chants, offerings, and the mystical atmosphere make this ceremony an unforgettable experience.

Day 9 – Madurai / Munnar

Morning: After breakfast, depart for Munnar, driving through scenic mountain roads surrounded by tea plantations.

Afternoon: Upon arrival, check in at the hotel and take some time to rest. In the afternoon, visit the Tata Tea Museum, also known as the Tea Museum. This site offers fascinating insight into the history and production process of tea. You will also admire the endless tea plantations forming a rolling green carpet across the hills of Munnar.

Note: The museum is closed on Mondays and visits should be planned accordingly.

Evening: Free evening to relax at the hotel.

Day 10 – Munnar

Morning: After breakfast, depart for Eravikulam National Park, famous for its lush landscapes and rolling hills covered with tea plantations. The park is home to the Nilgiri tahr, an endangered mountain goat endemic to South India. Take a shuttle to the park entrance followed by a pleasant walk in nature, offering spectacular views of the surrounding valleys. 

Afternoon: Return to Munnar and visit a tea plantation.

 

Evening: Free evening at the hotel.

Day 11 – Munnar / Alleppey

Program of the day: After breakfast, depart for Alleppey, often called the “Venice of the East.” Upon arrival, board a traditional houseboat for a cruise through the backwaters.

Enjoy authentic local meals, discover riverside villages, and admire a magical sunset before spending a peaceful night on board with dinner.

Day 12 – Alleppey / Cochin

Morning: After breakfast on the houseboat, disembark in Alleppey and transfer to your hotel in Cochin. Upon arrival, check in at the hotel.

Afternoon: Visit Mattancherry Palace, also known as the Dutch Palace. Built in 1555 by the Portuguese as a gift to the King of Cochin, Veera Kerala Varma, it was later renovated by the Dutch in 1663. Despite its European origins, the palace displays a distinctive Indo-Kerala architectural style, with finely carved wooden ceilings, decorative panels, and roofs reminiscent of Chinese pagodas.

Late afternoon: Attend a Kathakali dance performance, a traditional dance-drama from Kerala known for its elaborate costumes, distinctive makeup, and expressive facial gestures.

Day 13 – Cochin / Mararikulam

After breakfast, depart for Mararikulam Beach. Upon arrival, check in at the hotel and enjoy free time for relaxation.

Day 14 – Mararikulam

Free day at Mararikulam Beach.
Optional Ayurvedic massage available.

Day 15 – Mararikulam / Cochin Airport

After breakfast, enjoy free time at Mararikulam Beach (room available until 12:00 noon). In the evening, transfer to Cochin Airport for your flight back home.

Best time to visit South India : from October till March

The best time to visit South India is generally from November to March, when the weather is pleasant and relatively dry. During these months, temperatures are comfortable, usually ranging between 22°C and 30°C (72–86°F), making it ideal for exploring temples, historic towns, tea plantations, and the famous Kerala backwaters and beaches. This period also offers clear skies and enjoyable conditions for beach stays along the Malabar Coast. The monsoon season, from June to September, brings heavy rains, while April and May can be quite hot in the plains, although the hill stations such as Munnar remain cooler.
